The best picture Oscar nominees will double next year. Instead of five films in the running, there will be ten.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences dropped the bombshell this morning in Hollywood. It reaches back to the old days, when there were between nine and 12 best picture nominees some years.

Nominees for the 82nd Oscars will be announced on Feb. 2, 2010, with the ceremony on March 7th.

Honestly, I think this is a bad idea. Usually there are one or two films that deserve to be nominated and aren't and one or two films that don't deserve to but are. Making the total number of nominees 10 is pointless and is overkill. I mean, a best Picture should be an awesome (great, but I never describe anything as great because if something better comes along what's better than great. I do like to use classic, however. . .) film. Seriously, how many films per year deserve to be though as among the best ever? Certaintly not ten . . .

Unfortunately it is, no other award show (including music) has the pull and respect as the Oscars. The fact that 4+ hr awards show gets the ratings it does is mindblowing.

I think the reason the Acadademy is doing this is because the Oscars is starting to be perceived as a joke, which Batstud pointed out. This could be due to respected critics stating films such as TDK were slighted by not even being nominated. The problem with expanding the nominees is the length of the show. They need to cut the fat. If the Golden Globes can cover TV and Movies in a shorter time, the Oscars need to cut their time as well.

It's an interesting dilemma. There's certainly enough films that deserve to be nominated each year (simply by the sheer volume of movies that are made now), however, it tends to pit certain genres of films up against others that simply aren't going to win. Maybe it's more of a sop to the filmmakers to be "nominated' for best picture. It will also help films that came out early and those that weren't or aren't box office gold.
