Yahoo!Reports:

The monster thrill ride "Van Helsing," the first big movie of the summer, sold more than 2.5 million combined DVD and VHS units during its first day on store shelves Tuesday, generating an estimated $50 million in gross consumer spending, according to sources.

The Universal Studios actioner is on track to become the nation's top-selling home video this week, with sales estimates to exceed 5 million combined DVD and VHS units, according to industry sources. Data will be released next Wednesday.

The critically maligned film, starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale , earned a disappointing $120 million at the North American box office. It cost about $160 million to make.

Also new in stores Tuesday, Fox's "Garfield: The Movie," which cost about $50 million to make, sold more then 1.5 million combined DVD and VHS units during its first day, according to 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment executives.

Director Roland Emmerich's "The Day After Tomorrow," which sold 2.6 million combined DVD and VHS units nationwide during its first day on retail shelves Oct. 12, ended up moving anestimated 6 million combined units during the week ended Oct. 17, Fox said.

The disaster epic was the nation's No. 1 rental title last week, generating an estimated $10.72 million in consumer rental spending, according to Video Store magazine.

"Fahrenheit 9/11" was the nation's No. 2 rental title during the same frame, generating an estimated $6.95 million for a 12-day haul of about $14.2 million, according to Video Store magazine.

Despite the rumors, they NEVER intended to not do the sequel. Only to cut cost for the sequel... that article says it was made for 160 however Sommers admitted it was more like 200. That's the only reason Universal didn't back Van Helsing too much after it came out was because it didn't do nearly as well the second week as it did the first. It's not Universal that is keeping Van Helsing 2 from starting production... it's Sommers who is busy on 'Flash Gordon' and will not make the sequel until he's sure it's the way he wants it. Just have patience because it will be a few years.

Well, it made a lot overseas as well, so they shouldn't over look that....

And if Will-chan was playing Barin in "Flash Gordon", I would be so happy...

But anyway, I think that critics are people who won't admit they're wrong in a lot of cases. And I don't think any of them watched anime or read enough Victorian fantasy literature to get this film...or LXG for that matter.
