April 1, 2004 — From NewsLink Indiana's interview with the man behind the fish, Doug Jones (physical performer behind Abe Sapien):
Jones' character, Abe Sapien, also referred to as "Mer-Man," is part of a good-guy trio who originally came to life on the pages of the Hellboy comic book series. Hellboy (Ron Pearlman) and Liz Sherman (Selma Blair) round out the group. More than just a big heart and a brain, Sapien has telepathic powers. "Abe is the more gentle, intellectual side of the team," Jones said. "I'm clairvoyant, I can read minds. I can tell everything about you. And I can put my hand on this chair and I can tell who was in it before, where they live and what they drive."
The comic-book nature of the "Hellboy" story required Jones to go through a special-effects transformation every day before filming on location in the european city of Prague. Shooting for the film lasted six months. "There were about 12 foam-like latex rubber appliances that reshaped me from head to toe," said Jones.
