Holy hell. OK, I'll admit, I'm a Pixar fan. I've even been called a Pixar Fanboy by some.... well ok one. Now in my defense on that, I've never been a huge fan of A Bug's Life, HATED Ratatouille, and have never even seen Cars due to the fact that it never interested me. So I don't see how I get called that. Maybe it's cuz I love Wall-E so much, I dunno.
Now when it came to this movie, I figured "It's Pixar and a grumpy old man, they're great at grumpy old men. Ed Asner is PLAYING the grumpy old man, I'll give it a shot." The ads didn't say ANYTHING that gave me any hope. In fact, I watched every trailer, ad, anything I could just to get an IDEA as to what I was going in to see. Still, I had nothing. So pretty much no real hope was what I felt going into this flick. Maybe a glimmer. But small hope to say the least.
Ladies and gentlemen, Pixar has actually outdone itself. While not their BEST movie (Incredibles won't be topped), it is officialy my number 2. I NOW understand why we never got an idea as to the plot in the ads. To say what's going on really would destroy the surprises. For starters,
It took this movie 15 minutes to do what the Notebook took 2 hours to do. If they would have said in any ad WHY he was doing this, it would have DESTROYED that opening sequence of events. Then to add to the surprises... the talking dogs. My GOD that was some of the funniest stuff I've EVER seen in a movie. I laughed until I hurt when Alpha Beta and Gamma had their first little scene as talking dogs. Not to mention the fact that they spoke so directly and properly, it made it just THAT much funnier. Pixar has a talent for really taking idiocyncrases of animals and putting a voice to it. "SQUIRREL!" harkened back to the Finding Nemo "MINE!" and was one of the funnier running gags of the movie.
The other thing I loved about this movie was that it also once again just had the heart and soul that the OTHER animation studio completely leaves out of their movies. You can see the care and love they put into it. One thing I noticed was how Carl's facial hair grew as the days went on. Live action flicks don't even pay attention to that kind of detail.
And last but not least, they don't treat kids like their made of porcelain and can break at any sign of bad. This, I believe, is the first Pixar movie with any blood in it (with the exception of Dori's bloody nose in Finding Nemo I guess, but I mean like, actual really bleeding blood). People get hurt,
people also die, and others are alluded to the fact that they've been murdered.
It reminds of the days of 80's kid's movies, where life is actually life and kids can handle things better than most people think they can.
Also, the opening short was adorable, and the 3D aspect was awe-inspiring. But at the end of the day, I was shocked and amazed by Up. Never thought it would be anywhere NEAR as good as it actually was. And yes, I did cry. Something VERY few movies can actually get me to do. Read about how my dad kicked cancer's ASS!
