TMZ is reporting that Columbia Pictures' Tonight, He Comes is about to get its fourth director. The site says that Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights, The Rundown) is close to making a deal to direct the Will Smith superhero film.
The movie was originally set up at Artisan Entertainment, with Michael Mann directing and producing. When Mann decided to make Miami Vice instead, Artisan dumped the project. Mann and producer Akiva Goldsman took it to Columbia, and promptly hired Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines director Jonathan Mostow and Will Smith. Mostow exited the project due to creative differences, and Smith's most recent director, Gabriele Muccino (The Pursuit of Happyness) would attach for several weeks before splitting amicably.
Writen by Vince Gilligan and Vincent Ngo, the film centers on a tortured superhero who crash-lands in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, and tries to transform himself by romancing an alluring housewife, causing chaos in the city.
Goldsman and Mann are producing alongside Smith and his Overbrook Entertainment partner, James Lassiter. Mostow and Richard Saperstein are executive producing.
