As most of you know, we already have pretty firm rules about what you are NOT allowed to post, i.e. advertising, use of profanity, nudity, etc.

However, I thought some SHORT helpful hints about Courtesy when posting might help cover some of the gray areas that we encounter. Keeping in mind that it's supposed to be an enjoyable experience, and I think most will agree we have a good ethic and strong Moderators to back it all up.

So, when you post:

1. Try to acknowledge others ideas by posting responses on their topics, rather than creating your own, similar topic. In other words, look before you post. Duplicate posts on the same topic can confuse people and will be moved/deleted

I know we are all guilty of this at times, because there are a lot of overlapping subjects. Older posts that are days out of date do not necessarily apply, although the Mods are also here to "Thread Dive", and bring up useful discussions and info from time to time.

Acknowledge that they have useful ideas, information and maybe a different point-of-view.

2. Read other's posts carefully to avoid a misunderstanding, especially where your opinion differs with theirs. Do this before replying.

3. Be supportive. Mention if you found the information useful, or if it made you think differently about something.

4. When you post a reply on a subject that you hold an opposing opinion about, phrase your remarks carefully. Make your point, but say it in a way that doesn't suggest the other person is wrong or the idea is not valid.

For example: I agree (partly) with you, however...

I never thought of that, but also consider...

I know we disagree on this, but here's what I think...

We believe that opposing views on heated topics are great, but require extra care.

However, the one thing that needs to be avoided is head on, personal attacks when views differ. Obviously, when one has discussions, one has conflict and one tends to get a little bit heated. However, as long as everyone watches themselves, these discussion can be great and make a lot of people think.

5. Be kind when someone is an 'unconventional' speller or thinker. This is a forum visible to all parts of the globe. Not everybody's language skills are the same. Ask for a clarification. Simple, and often effective.

6. Basically, treat others the way you would like to be treated. This will foster more cross communication and ideas, and that is the best part of these forums.

7. Don't feed the Trolls and occasional Flamers (Balrogs?)who visit by forgetting these courtesy guidelines. Don't argue, it's not a debate you can win.

8. Make sure to use SPOILER tags where appropriate. AVOID SPOILER topic headings, or your thread will be deleted.

A poster may remind another poster of the standards of behavior if they see someone getting out of line as long as they do it in a civil manner. Posters can also e-mail or IM a mod or e-mail Tiffany, Peshkwe, or Kit-Kat if there are no mods about, and then to be patient about it, we do have lives after all and can't be on 24-7.

More than anything, have fun! We want the community to thrive and attract new people. Remember... a welcoming, courteous environment is best for discussion.

Thank You, and

Happy Posting!

Rostron
