The Ragin Cajin said: Great movie.. now i guess we can look forward to this years big halloween costume huh?
Now that's a statement of truth.^^^LOL
I thought the movie was good, it will stimulate some discussion.
At the same time, it takes a lot of thought to separate the emotion from the reality of living in such a state as was portrayed in "V".
Totalitarianism in western democracies is certainly more insidious, and much harder to define, than the movie portrays. The extreme vision of the future in the movie does have shadows of what's going on today.
However, it made its points clearly enough for the pop-culture crowd to realize. The performances were strong, but the whole look and feel was curiously 1984 for me. I just have been keenly aware of these issues for a lot of years, so it held less impact for me. For those just waking up to the kind of country they live in (once they shake off the distractions of media, movie stars, cellphones, online gaming, and the Internet) it will have some value as a moral compass. Something the youth of today, really really lack.
On the plus side:
Technically it was well-paced, without resorting to being an action film.
If it raises people's awareness, and makes them try to follow issues they care about and protest/vote at the polls/vote with your pocketbook, then it all works.
Worth seeing. *** of ***** "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us." |

Where does one start with how simply juvenile this film is? From the opening, where "cops" use badges mocking a Christian Cross, to the pedophile vicar, to the "deeply religious conservative" dictator, the film is like a Howard Dean wet dream. There's nothing thought provoking at all in here. It's simply an attack on GWB, and the fight on terrorism. I find it humorous how one of the members of the entertainment industry glorifies the Koran in his secret room, yet left out of that is the FACT that his kind would be the first to go in a Muslim state. Lesbianism is glorified, Pharmaceutical companies are bashed, Christianity is mocked, and conservatives are terrorists...and oh yeah, suicide bombers are heroes. Wow, how screwed up is this movie? I wrote WB and asked for a refund of my ticket price. It was simply pathetic.

*sighs* well since i am not a true member of this particular board, i won't even begin to break down that negative flawed post... Anyways what i will do is post the longest monologue with words that begin with the letter V..
Voila`! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is it vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished, as the once vital voice of the verisimilitude now venerates what they once vilified. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose vis-a`-vis an introduction, and so it is my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V. El' Fino, El' Fine

So what actually was your problem with the film. Were you offended by its attitude towards religion. The fact that it seems to me that this totalitarian era was fuelled by religion. That in the olden days religion controlled the masses. It was possibly the worst thing in history. It controlled the masses, religion is the main reason behind draconian law. Religion was used by both the good guys and the bad guys. But enough of my ear bashing on religion. Was it the story you didn't like. The fact that it didn't make you think? If so, why didn't it make you think? that seems mighty suspicious to me, but anyways. Was it the blood. Was it the terrorism. And as far as I'm concerned, since it's set in england, i see it more as an off-take of St. Georges Cross. It was in red. Oh and what the hell is GWB, if you mean something to do with George W bush, I believe that in my opinion that is totally wrong. It's set in ENGLAND, NOT the usa. So it has nothing to do with your PRESIDENT. If anything it has more to do with guy fawkes than Mr. President.
And maybe you might understand it better if you actually knew anything about england or if you lived over here.
But enough of the negative. Imagine trying to say that massive paragraph of alliteration out loud, Hugo, or whatever his name was, he did a great job with the V's, it's very awkward to say all those V's one after another. Rule Britannia yeah! lol |

He's saying it is cashing in on popular feelings on many issues. In fact, I felt that was a very weak part of the film as well. It tried to tackle/attack too many popular issues. The message and V's purpose was to effect change.
It was a simplistic view of what it takes to make a change, resorting to violent action.
So, while the poster is tacking it onto the anti-Bush statements of others, it does point out the weakness of the film, in that it provides no real answers to all the "causes" it espoused.
Rostron
So, to explain my position again, I wanted it to be better than it was. It had a lot of flaws regarding its purpose. My peeves with the film were not necessarily that it was too juvenile (in some ways it ways) or that it attacked Bush or the religious right or something like that. I just thought it was murky in its approach. They should have picked one thing to focus on in the film.
"Crash" for example, works as a film, because it takes on fear (of each other) and sticks to that theme. V, by taking on too many causes, doesn't do justice to any of them. "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us." |

| Basically the MAIN point of V was to stand up for what you believe in, and to know that NOONE or NOTHING can destory your ideas or anyone elses. If you do not like something, you should be able to voice your oppinon about it.. That movie was based on a Dictatorship, which is what usually happens when anarchy accurs, thus the problem without a structured government. Casue there can never be anarchy in a structure government, casue if you kill the president, the order of power just goes down the line, where as in a dictatorship, the power goes to the one who takes control of the sistuation and assumes power, sort of like what hitler did... Well, my problem with the film is that a powerful message is lost within its juvenile ideology. Of course it's "bad" for citizens to fear their government. Of course it's "bad" for people to be apathetic towards their government. The critical question is "How did they get to that point, and how do we as a society ensure we do not end up there?" I for one, believe we have already ceded a great deal towards that end. Look at all the Government controlled programs we have now, supposedly for our own health and safety. Income tax. We cede control of our earnings, our livelihood, and details of what we do, and who we are on a daily basis to the government. Social Security. We give control of 13% of our income to the government for a supposed guarantee that we will have an income stream in our later years. Public schools. Those of us who own houses pay a significant percantage of our house payment to the government every year so our children can be indoctrinated in the goodness of our government, and the evils of religion (I guess the Wachowski's learned well). Medicare. Yeah, medicare. We are told what medicines we can and can't use. Drug control. Well, you can go on and on.
If you look back over the last century, you find that the vast majority of human rights violations and dictatorial regimes were advanced by Godless or cult influences. China and Mao. USSR and Lenin/Stalin. Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh. Afghanistan and the Taliban. Iran and the Ayatollah. The abuses you cite regarding Christianity were real, but were corrected. They were not a result of the religion, but a result of people abusing the power they had gained from it. V does not explain how the Vicar obtained his position. Did he start innocently, and get corrupted by the Church? Was he a political hack, appointed by the Chancellor? For my money, I am a big fan of 1984, Animal Farm, Brave New World, etc. They do a much better job of discussing the evils of government excess.

I saw it on Friday with my friends, and of course they were laughing the entire time, so when I left, I felt a little disappointed. But I saw it again on Saturday with some other friends that actually appreciated it, so I caught a lot more stuff this time, and I liked it a LOT more. And I totally second the fact that some of the stuff in this movie definitely has to do with society today. I thought it was a very beautiful movie, and Dario Marianelli's score was amazing. After I saw it, I wanted to start my own revolution.
