I believe they have always had an audience. However, the audience has gotten older, and more violence-attuned. It takes more to have an effect. So, in esssence...

As youthful optimism gives way to more 18+ cynicism, so go the graphic novels.

That's not scientific, but that's a very amateurish pop-psychology explanation.

I agree, for example the addition of more drama in X3

"Dark" comic book adaptations like Batman Begins and Sin City were two of my favorite movies last year. Hopefully V for Vendetta will follow suit. Superman Returns is also coming out this year--doubtfully as sinister as Sin City, Batman Begins, and V for Vendetta.

i think you have a point, they should start making movies of more up beat comics. for example, Archie "the movie" or beetle bailey"at war" those would be great! but seriously Goober, when the movie is darker it takes away from the cartoon aspect of the story and makes it more realistic and thus cooler, but I guess there will always be people who favor batman and robin esc movies. I think they are lame and i have wasted enough time on you.

Oh, and to answer the original question: They don't really appeal to me. I'm just keeping my finger on the pulse of such creations.

Another reason why there is an influx of these types of stories is that its writers and creators come from countries that have "issues". You write what you know or believe you know.

I love the fact that these comic/movies are dark,, but I mean,,, Sin City is based on a Dark Graphic Novel,, It was meant to be Dark from Day 1,

Constantine is also a Very Dark Hero,, also Dark from day 1,, I mean, come on,, its about Demons, Hell, etc.

Batman had a few years that it was less Dark and more Childish,, like in the 60s with the live Batman show, but when you think about it,, a man, lost his parents at a young age, dresses as a Bat, wants to Scare his Victims,,I mean,, Come on,, He was meant to be Dark from the Beginning,, Batman Begins just reminded people of who "Batman" really is.

Spawn, Punisher, Blade, Ghost Rider are all Anti Hero's, their movies are gonna have to be dark as well,,, but Spider-Man, Hulk, X-Men, Superman, etc don't have to be and their were not in their first movies... Spider-Man 1 & 2 wont dark, either were X-Men 1 & 2 or Hulk,, but their stories are changing into more Serious, Darker Matters, like Magneto Finally making his Final Stand against the Humans, Spider-Man with that Famous Symbiot story that starts turning him evil until he dumps the Costume, and Venom is born etc.

sorry for that long Explanation, but ya,, and I think V For Vendetta is part of that "Anti-Hero's" section, altho I do agree with his reasons more then the Punisher's.

like they said darker comics are cooler, and more realistic and i hav to agree because most people wound be anti-heroes if they had powers, not many would turn out good hearted lik superman. besides, anti-heroes and meaner/scarier villains make the stories little bit more cooler and hell of a lot more bad ass-ish. For example of anti-heroes: Punisher, Ghost rider, Blade, Hellboy, Daredevil, Sin City, Batman, Hulk (yes hulk is an anti-heroe, because he opposes the government, he's a monster, and he destroys cites and stuff), Spawn, V for Vendetta, and Luke Cage. And they also kill the bad guys more often, personally i'd lik to see spidey more bad ass anti-hero lik. that would be awesome.

one of the earliest comic book adaptations blade 1 is arguably the darkest there is and its one of my favourites.
comic book movies are dark because they deal with dark issues-fear, terrorism. camp comic book movies are always bad-fantastic four or fatally bad-batman and robin

It all traces back to the comics. Ever since Marvel came on to the scene in the 60's and showed that comics could be mature and not written for kids, some of the best comic stories ever written were darker.
Think of the best comic stories: Death of Gwen Stacy, Days of Future Past, Enemy in a Bottle, Killing Joke, Kingdom Come...

All are darker and written for adults.
But for years, that never translated to cartoons and movies because of various censorship boards. In the comics we get Story of a Gun and on tv we get the Spiderman and his Amazing Friends.

Finally in the 90's Batman: The Animated Series proved that you could make a good cartoon that was true to the source material.

It took a little longer for it to catch on in the movies, but I am glad it finally is. Now that doesn't mean I want a dark Superman or Spidey. Those guys work best when they are filled with hope (Supes) or wit (Spidey). But for the X-Men or Batman, I welcome a little depth.

I think it's good that there's something different, other than the same old superhero thing.

I dissagree. The world is no more dark than it ever was. The comics and movies just do a better job of representing it.

Think about like 60 years ago. We were at war with one enemy who attacked us by surprise, killing hundreds in a matter of minutes on a Sunday morning. The other enemy was a genocidal monster who was trying to eradicate everyone he deemed less than perfect. Spousal abuse and child abuse were not against the law. Blacks didn't have the same rights whites had and women weren't much better off.
Being openly gay was almost a death sentence outside of Hollywood. There it would ony kill your carear.
There was a race to build the first nuclear bomb. The cold war was starting. Disease made infant mortality rate about 50%.

How are things worse now?

Now i dont know if you've not mentioned this with all your fancy words but people just don't want the happy go lucky anymore, people dont believe in it and wont swallow it. I can honestly say I'd sooner talk to someone who's pessimistic than optimistic, and eternal optimists just do my head in. Always so cheery, i bet if i were a hero id be more an anti hero. People can believe in anti hero's, superheroes - pah! no one wants this anymore, its all so fake and unreal. People just dont want this anymore.

If Ive just repeated anything you've said, i apologise but i had to put my spoke in.

The population of the world is larger, so the number of misdeeds increases proportionately. So, in effect it is worse. But, as you say, there are some improvements. Hard to say if they balance it out.
