Audiences Hold No Grudge At The Weekend Box Office

SUBMITTED BY Scooby

October 24, 2004 — The Associated Press reports that The Grudge, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, was the #1 film at the weekend box office, earning an estimated $40 million. Surviving Christmas, starring Ben Affleck, opened at #7 with a dismal $7.5 million.

Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony, had this to say about The Grudge's success

"I would say that when you do $40 million, it's got to be more than" the Halloween influence, Bruer said. "You have Sam Raimi, who's got incredible knowledge of this genre. We had tremendous marketing, and Sarah Michelle Gellar, who was out there pounding the pavement, fighting for this film."

The animated film Shark Tale which was the top movie for three straight weekends, slipped to second place with $14.3 million, bringing its total box office gross to $136.9 million.

Shall We Dance, starring Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez, was #3 with $8.6 million while Friday Night Lights earned $7 million.
