April 24, 2005 — "The Interpreter", the thriller starring Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn, opened #1 at the weekend box office, proving that smart films can still make money for Hollywood. The film earned an estimated $22.8 million. The other weekend debut "A Lot Like Love", a romantic comedy starring Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet, opened with a so-so $7.7 million, coming in at #4. Last weekend's #1 film "The Amityville Horror", starring Ryan Reynolds, fell to second place with $14.2. The film has earned $43.8 million in two-weeks. "Sahara", starring the hunky Matthew McConaughey, the stunning Penelope Cruz, and the amazingly brilliant Steve Zahn (okay, one of these statements were a lie....sorry, Matt) earned $9 milllion for a total of $48 million in three-weeks. "Kung Fu Hustle", the action/adventure/art/foreign/comedy (sheesh), was the #5 film with $7.29 million.
